Follow preparations for PodCamp Boston via twitter.com/podcamp

200710250836In the “cool uses of Twitter” category, you can now follow the stream of conversation about this weekend’s PodCamp Boston 2 via Twitter. Just go to http://twitter.com/podcamp to see the posts. If you are a Twitter user, follow the podcamp account and those posts will appear right in your normal Twitter feed.

The cool thing is that to contribute to the “podcamp” stream, you simply need to start following the ‘podcamp’ Twitter user and then type “pod” followed by a space and a message as a Twitter update. Your post will appear in the podcamp feed after a minute or two. This was apparently set up by kosso and uses the Twitter API. Neat to see this kind of “group” functionality…

Facebook event created for IABC Heritage Region Conference next week…

Iabcheritageregionconf-2If any of you: 1) are attending the IABC Heritage Region Conference next Monday and Tuesday near Cincinnatti (it’s actually in Kentucky); and 2) are a Facebook user, I have now created a Facebook event for the conference. Given that the conference is happening so soon, there’s obviously not much pre-conference networking that can be done. Still, it will be interesting to see if IABC members in this region (northeastern US) are also Facebook users (and are going to the conference).

I’ll be there… getting in late on Sunday (missing the opening reception at an acquarium that sounded rather nice!) and doing my “Podcasting 101” session on Tuesday. If you are an IABC member attending the conference, please do say hello!

This conference will be photographed and uploaded! (aka life in the always-on(line) world)

200709291047Being at a conference full of bloggers, podcasters, etc., one of the more subtle elements to be aware of is this:

There are a ton of people taking pictures – and uploading them all to Flickr!

Translation… just remember that whatever shirt you are wearing or however you style your hair – it will be up on the Internet for all to see. Forever. (Or at least as long as sites like Flickr are around.) Or if you are doing something funny with all those bottles of beer…. or dancing on the table… or whatever.

You will be photographed (especially if it’s funny). It will be uploaded. There you are. If you don’t like that… if you want to keep pictures like that off the Internet… well, you’re only real choice is to not attend a conference like this!

This conference will be photographed. Recorded. On audio. On video. And uploaded.

So it goes. You have been warned. Dress appropriately. Assume that anything you do could be online.

Welcome to life in the transparent always-online world.

By the way, if you want to see pictures from this show, the Podcast and New Media Expo, you can look at these links below. The tag the conference has been encouraging people to use is “newmediaexpo2007” but not everyone is using that. Here they are:

The last link is from C.C. Chapman, who is a great photographer among his many other talents. He took the picture I included above, which is of me and Terry Fallis of InsidePR fame.

Almost to Ontario for the Podcast Expo…

200709280016Almost to Ontario… California, that is. It’s been an absolutely exhausting three days here in Phoenix at AstriCon (coverage on my Disruptive Telephony blog), but now it’s time to get onboard yet another plane and head over to Ontario, California. As you can see in the picture, I’m now at the Phoenix airport at gate A10 waiting to get on a US Air flight out of here at 9:41pm. We have a plane and a crew, so that’s all good. We should start boarding in a few minutes. While it made sense to do these conferences back-to-back, it’s definitely a bit on the exhausting side. I am, though, very much looking forward to meeting many friends in the podcasting community. Just one more flight….

Heading out to Podcast and New Media Expo next week…

200709211012I’m delighted to say that I’ll now definitely be at the Podcast and New Media Expo at the end of next week (and into the weekend) out in Ontario, California. I was debating whether or not to go because I’ll be at AstriCon the previous few days in Phoenix, Arizona. Originally I was intending to just do AstriCon, but I’ve changed my schedule a bit so that I’ll fly from Phoenix to Ontario, CA, on Thursday night so that I can participate in PME events on Friday through Sunday. Taking the good old red-eye home Sunday night.

I went to last year’s PME and very much enjoyed spending time with all the various podcasters and bloggers that I’ve come to know. Should be a good bit of fun this year as well, although my focus will be a wee bit different. One of the various new paths I’m very seriously considering is to head into consulting and may do more with social media work. I’ve already been advising several companies about podcasts, blogs, etc…. I may turn that into something more formal. So my trip to PME will be much more business-focused than last year… and I’ll be looking to talk to a number of folks about potential partnership opportunities. (Are you interested in potentially partnering with me? or engaging my services? Let’s talk. 😉

In any event, most of all it will simply be just plain fun to reconnect face-to-face with so many of the other members of the social media community whom I know now as friends!

If you read this and are going to be out at the PME, please do drop a line as I’m always interested to connect with folks.

SocialNetworkDevCamp – an unconference for developers interested in mashups and APIs in social media tools…

imageWhat are you doing on September 8th and 9th, 2007?  If  you are in the San Francisco Bay area (or can get there), and more precisely Richmond, California (a bit north of Oakland and Berkeley), it appears that there will now be an “unconference” called “SocialNetworkDevCamp” with the purpose:

SocialNetworkDevCamp will focus on API and Widget development from Facebook, Twitter, Pownce, Linked In and others. The camp will also start the process of identifying open APIs and data structures which would facilitate the creation of open standards for social networking.

Very cool to see…. and hopefully it will stimulate a good bit of discussion and action around the potential mashups that can occur between all these various services.  “Open standards for social networking” would also be very good to see!

If are interested in attending, just edit the wiki page and add yourself to the list of participants (or volunteers).

(Tip of the hat to Julian Bond for raising this issue in a Skype groupchat focused on mashups.)

Mitch Joel: "Burn the ships!" – linking social media to the 1400’s…

Getting caught up one some blogging, I just had to comment that I loved Mitch Joel’s “Burn the ships!” motif in his talk at the Canadian Marketing Association conference back in May.  He started this with a post back in September, “It’s Time For Marketers to Burn the Ships” but this was that motif given form in a presentation.  Now, I wasn’t there at the CMA to hear it, but I did read the reports and I’ve consistently heard great things about Mitch’s presentations. I’m sure it was fun.

I just like the slogan… “burn the ships!”  What a great way to express the need to plunge into the new world and dive deeply.

Anyway, kudos to Mitch for coming up with a memorable way to frame the whole discussion.  (And yes, Mitch, given that we’re only about 1.5 hours apart, one of these days I will have to finally hear you present!)

Sometimes "life" intervenes… I am now NOT at VON Europe / Podcamp Europe in Stockholm

As I wrote over on my Disruptive Telephony blog, sometimes things outside one’s control intervene in the best of plans… and so now I’m home in Vermont for the week instead of in Stockholm.   There is still a dinner tonight in Stockholm among some listeners to my podcast (which is still going ahead) and a colleague from the open standards world, Cullen Jennings of Cisco and IETF, will be replacing me on the VoIP security panel at VON that my friend Martyn Davies will be moderating.

What I can’t easily cover, though, were the two talks I was going to do over at Podcamp Europe.   I was going to give a little “Audacity 101” intro to using Audacity to create podcasts… something I’ve been doing now for 2+ years and have become quite a strong user of it.  And then I was going to give a talk on “using VoIP softphones to include co-hosts or interview guests in your podcast”.  Both were going to be fun.  Alas, I’ll have to save them for Podcamp Boston2 this fall.

Meanwhile, I’ll be looking forward to reading all about the various events happening over there this week…. would have been fun!

May 7th in Burlington, VT – "Green Mountain Media" – a panel discussion on trends in today’s online and print media

If any of you reading this are in the Vermont area, next Monday (May 7th) here in Burlington, the Publicity Club of New England is hosting : “Green Mountain Media: Panel Discussion and Networking Event” featuring six writers and editors talking about trends in today’s media.  The panelists are:

  • Mike Townsend, editor, Burlington Free Press
  • Shay Totten, editor, Vermont Guardian
  • Joe Healy, editor, Vermont Magazine
  • Peter Oliver, editor, Ski Vermont Magazine
  • Peggy Shinn, ski and travel freelance writer
  • Sarah Tuff, freelance writer for National Geographic Adventure, Men’s Journal, New York Times

Sounds like it should be a great event and if you are interested, you can still register.  Sadly, I’m otherwise committed that night, but I look forward to future events in our area.

Podcamp Europe registrations look to be going well… 6 weeks out and 78 people!

Registration for Podcamp Europe (June 12-14, Stockholm, Sweden) seems to be going well… 78 people currently registered, with what looks to be quite an interesting range of people there.   Of course, there still need to be more sessions, but those will come as the time gets closer I am sure.

My primary purpose of travelling to Stockholm, of course, is Spring VON Europe where I will be speaking on VoIP security on a panel moderated by my good friend and colleague Martyn Davies. I’m looking forward to meeting a good number of folks there and hearing some of the sessions.

As my schedule and meetings allow, I’m also looking forward to visiting Podcamp Europe (as I know, is Martyn).  In the spirit of things I naturally put myself down for a session or two and will fit those in somewhere around my VON schedule.   Should definitely be a interesting time.

If you are in Stockholm (or can easily get there), do check out Podcamp Europe.  Registration is free and based on recent Podcamp events will no doubt be a very useful and enjoyable experience.
