My social media/podcasting…. license plate?

Lest there be any doubt that I’m a social media geek, here’s the new license plate on my Toyota Matrix:

My social media license plate

Yes, indeed, when we moved here to New Hampshire from Vermont and had to get new license plates, I asked if this was available. Since it was available, I figured it was too much fun to pass up… so I paid my $25 extra for the vanity plate. Whether I keep it for multiple years will remain to be seen, but at least for now my car is an advertisement for social media. 🙂

P.S. And yes, for those who aren’t aware, New Hampshire’s state slogan really isLive Free or Die“!

Squawk Box conf calls/podcasts this week – links and topics

squawkbox.jpgWith Alec Saunders away on vacation, I agreed to step in to host our daily “Squawk Box” conference calls this week and next. I’m working on lining up some interesting guests and in the meantime we’ll also have our regular tech conversations that have always seemed to go well. (FYI, if you or someone you know would like to be a special guest either this week or next, please do let me know.)

I’m particular excited about our show on Tuesday, July 1st, where we’ll have author and researcher Jonathan Zittrain on our show. I’ve started reading his new book, “The Future of the Internet – And How to Stop It“, and I have to say that so far it strikes at the core of what we’ve talked about frequently on the show… the move from “walled gardens” to open networks and now the frightening potential re-emergence of walled gardens and proprietary “lock-in” business models. More information about the book – and video of Jonathan Zittrain – can be found on: http://futureoftheinternet.org/

As has been the practice, here are the URLs for the shows this week – I’m looking forward to seeing many of you on the calls:

MONDAY – JUNE 30th – Discussion of Microsoft after Bill Gates and Steve Gillmor’s view on the subject, the end of sales of Windows XP, as well as Google’s move to help academia move into cloud computing:
http://apps.facebook.com/calliflower/conf/show/34158

TUESDAY – JULY 1st – Jonathan Zittrain interview:

WEDNESDAY – JULY 2nd:

THURSDAY – JULY 3rd:

FRIDAY – JULY 4th – There will be no call.

I look forward to seeing many of you on the calls this week.

NOTE: The calls will be posted over on Alec’s Saunderslog.com although right now I seem to be having problems connecting to the site. Hopefully that is just a temporary issue…

What’s the best handheld video camera for creating video podcasts?

Okay all you video podcasters out there, what in your opinion is the best handheld video camera out there for creating video podcasts?

Here’s the deal. I’m heading down to Orlando next week where we will be doing a number of presentations in front of customers. I want to record those presentations in video form and put them up on Voxeo’s blogs, YouTube, maybe blip.tv, etc. I’m also going to several conferences in March where my intent is to create some more video podcasts.

Right now the videos I’ve put online have come either from my trusty Canon SD1000 “point-and-shoot” camera or from the webcam in my MacBook Pro. Those have been fine for short videos. In fact, I’ve been quite impressed with the quality that you can get from such tools. But now I’m looking to record longer presentations. Some might be an hour or more. Sure, I can probably do that with my Canon SD1000, but I think I’m getting out of the range of what’s realistic to do with camera.

Unfortunately I haven’t really paid any attention to the video camera market lately and a simple glance at the Sunday newspaper flyers tells me that there are a zillion choices out there. Here’s what I think I want in terms of a camera:

  • SMALL – I travel to conferences and having been burned too many times I never check luggage and always travel with carry-ons. So the camera, power adapters, etc., need to be small for travel.
  • TRIPOD MOUNT – I’m recording hour-long presentations. It’s gotta work with a tripod.
  • LONG RECORDING TIME – I might be recording 8 hours of presentations and I really do not want to be having to stop and transfer files over to my laptop.
  • EASY TRANSFER TO COMPUTER (MAC) – I want to be easily able to transfer the video files over to my MacBook Pro. (Where I’ll probably simply edit them in iMovie and then post them.)
  • GOOD BATTERY LIFE – Next week in Orlando I’ll have power but in March at conferences I’ll be roaming around. I don’t want to have to be constantly swapping batteries – but I also do want the ability to swap batteries if I need to do so.
  • ERASABLE MEDIA – I don’t want to be needing to carry around blank tapes or anything like that. The new range of cameras that shoot to hard drives or SD cards seem intriguing because I can just copy over to the PC, erase it and start recording again.
  • INEXPENSIVE – Oh, and by the way, I don’t want to spend a fortune on such a camera.

Two desirable attributes of a camera would be:

  • SEPARATE AUDIO INPUT – When I’m recording a session where the audio is also being captured through microphones, I want to take an audio feed from the mixer and feed it directly into the camera.
  • ABILITY TO ACT AS A WEBCAM – Perhaps I’m stretching too far on this one (or getting away from “inexpensive”) but it would be very cool if the camera could also be configured to be a USB (or Firewire) webcam for my MacBook Pro. Say that I’m at a conference and want to do live video streaming from my MBP. Obviously I can use the MBP’s built-in webcam, but if I also have this new video camera, it would be great to use it as the video input for the MBP. (Bonus points if I could do both recording in the camera and simultaneously streaming to the MBP… but that may be too far of a stretch.)

Any advice, comments, opinions, recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Anything I left off my list that I should consider? (Thanks in advance)

Marantz video demonstrating their new PMD620 portable recorder

As listeners to FIR may know (or longtime readers of this blog), I’m a big fan of the Marantz PMD660 and have been using it now for recording interviews in the field for most of 2 years, if not longer. It’s a great unit and I’ve been very happy with it.

However, it’s rather on the large side (looks like an old tape recorder!) and I’ve always been looking at the smaller units like the Edirol R9, Zoom H4, m-Audio MicroTrack, etc. Out at the New Media Expo last fall, I saw the preview of Marantz’s new PMD620 and was quite intrigued. Not enough yet to buy one, but after my last trip where the PMD660 took up so much room in my travel bag, I am starting to think about it again.

Anyway, the folks at Marantz have now put up a YouTube video talking about the product:

FYI, I found it on their Education Blog after receiving an email from them announcing the video being on their blog. The comments are amusing because predictably someone was asking if the video was an example of the audio quality (or lack thereof) of the PMD620 (it wasn’t).

“For Immediate Release” launches discussion forums… come join the conversation!

fir_100x100.gifIn getting caught up on some listening to “For Immediate Release“, I noted that back at the beginning of the month, Shel & Neville launched the “FIR Forum” as a way to encourage conversations among FIR listeners. They tried this first with the discussion forums over on a Facebook Group, but, like most Facebook Groups I’ve seen, those forums hardly ever got used. So now they are trying it with what seems to be directly-hosted forum software. It’s not behind any walls… anyone can read the posts *without* registration. Anyone can register and join in the conversation. We’ll see how it goes!

If you are interested in issues around PR, communications and social media, please do head on over and check it out. Stick around, if you like, and please do join in to the conversation!

Heading to Boston for PodCamp Boston 2…. but first a little Curling…

200710261659I am finally about to get in my car and head down to Boston. It’s about a 4 hour drive and in the end I’ll be checking into the Westin hotel adjacent to the BCEC where PodCamp Boston is being held tomorrow and Sunday. I’ll be at the Social Media Breakfast tomorrow morning at 7am in the Westin, I’ll be at the Podcamp party at the other hotel tomorrow night… and I’m giving a presentation first thing Sunday morning (9am) on recording podcasts using VoIP/Skype. I’ll also be there for the rest of the day Sunday.

However, I won’t be there during the day on Saturday due to another passion of mine. Instead, I’ll be over at The Country Club where I be in a training session all day to be certified as a Level 1 Curling Instructor by the USA Curling Association. You may or may not know that I got bitten badly by the curling bug while living in Ottawa for 5 years and have been involved to a degree in helping with the efforts of the Green Mountain Curling Club to get the sport of curling going in the state of Vermont. Having a passion for teaching (of all subjects) I have wanted for some time to get certified as an instructor so that I could help teach clinics for the GMCC. Unfortunately the only date in the northeastern US for an instructor clinic that lined up with my schedule was tomorrow. (And I actually signed up for it back before PodCamp Boston planning had really gotten underway.)

So that’s where you’ll find me tomorrow… starting out talking about social media and podcasting… then throwing rocks at houses… then back in the social media world!

Right now, I’m heading out on the road… Good news is that I’ve got a couple of episodes of FIR queued up that will keep me going for most of the trip.

Facebook event created for IABC Heritage Region Conference next week…

Iabcheritageregionconf-2If any of you: 1) are attending the IABC Heritage Region Conference next Monday and Tuesday near Cincinnatti (it’s actually in Kentucky); and 2) are a Facebook user, I have now created a Facebook event for the conference. Given that the conference is happening so soon, there’s obviously not much pre-conference networking that can be done. Still, it will be interesting to see if IABC members in this region (northeastern US) are also Facebook users (and are going to the conference).

I’ll be there… getting in late on Sunday (missing the opening reception at an acquarium that sounded rather nice!) and doing my “Podcasting 101” session on Tuesday. If you are an IABC member attending the conference, please do say hello!

This conference will be photographed and uploaded! (aka life in the always-on(line) world)

200709291047Being at a conference full of bloggers, podcasters, etc., one of the more subtle elements to be aware of is this:

There are a ton of people taking pictures – and uploading them all to Flickr!

Translation… just remember that whatever shirt you are wearing or however you style your hair – it will be up on the Internet for all to see. Forever. (Or at least as long as sites like Flickr are around.) Or if you are doing something funny with all those bottles of beer…. or dancing on the table… or whatever.

You will be photographed (especially if it’s funny). It will be uploaded. There you are. If you don’t like that… if you want to keep pictures like that off the Internet… well, you’re only real choice is to not attend a conference like this!

This conference will be photographed. Recorded. On audio. On video. And uploaded.

So it goes. You have been warned. Dress appropriately. Assume that anything you do could be online.

Welcome to life in the transparent always-online world.

By the way, if you want to see pictures from this show, the Podcast and New Media Expo, you can look at these links below. The tag the conference has been encouraging people to use is “newmediaexpo2007” but not everyone is using that. Here they are:

The last link is from C.C. Chapman, who is a great photographer among his many other talents. He took the picture I included above, which is of me and Terry Fallis of InsidePR fame.

Almost to Ontario for the Podcast Expo…

200709280016Almost to Ontario… California, that is. It’s been an absolutely exhausting three days here in Phoenix at AstriCon (coverage on my Disruptive Telephony blog), but now it’s time to get onboard yet another plane and head over to Ontario, California. As you can see in the picture, I’m now at the Phoenix airport at gate A10 waiting to get on a US Air flight out of here at 9:41pm. We have a plane and a crew, so that’s all good. We should start boarding in a few minutes. While it made sense to do these conferences back-to-back, it’s definitely a bit on the exhausting side. I am, though, very much looking forward to meeting many friends in the podcasting community. Just one more flight….
